ANTHONY RAMOS
THE GOOD & THE BAD

LP • CD • PROMO ︎ FOR REPUBLIC RECORDS

01. 2019 ︎ 10. 2019

Anthony Ramos found fame as a founding cast member in the broadway musical Hamilton. His talents went on to lead him to act alongside Lady Gaga in the 2019 remake of “A Star is Born”. The Good & The Bad was his much anticipated debut release on Republic Records.
Working closely with Anthony, I crafted album cover, package and campaign around a series of family photos and studio imagery which wove custom typography and a strong grid into a fresh visual take for this deeply personal record.

︎︎︎ PHYSICAL PACKAGING
This album looked great online, but it really takes off as a physical product. The childhood photography with it’s faded color sitting against the greyscale of our photoshoot began to tell a story that fit in line with the message in the music.
By adding a relentless overprint with tight grid-work that appears to ignore the background imagery we developed an approach that felt as honest as Anthony and daringly wove itself though every aspect of the CD and LP packaging.

︎︎︎ CUSTOM TYPOGRAPHY
The design for this entire campaign is held up by the type. Each letter painstakingly crafted with textures, brush strokes, blurs and thresholds until the effect of a frenzied night behind a letterpress was achieved.
I built an entire alphabet with contextual alternatives that was used to cohesively brand all digital singles, marketing endeavors, socials and posters. Each letter hand placed each time.

︎︎︎ MERCHANDISE
The cover artwork and custom typography set such a strong tone that we were extend it into a line of merchandise that would go out on tour with Anthony.
The gritty block printed approach moved into some really interesting areas as we explored how far this system could go.

︎︎︎ OUT OF HOME CAMPAIGN
The promotional efforts that accompany such a big release are themselves gargantuan affairs. The case with The Good & The Bad was no different.
A Times Square takeover employed unique, site specific multi-billboard buildouts, each of which featured the custom typography and teased photography from the album package. - As you can see, Anthony looks pretty happy about it.
